WCUP: Ken Schrader - Talladega Notes

22 April 1999

KEN SCHRADER
TALLADEGA SUPERSPEEDWAY

SCHRADER’S THOUGHTS HEADING INTO THE DIEHARD 500:
"Restrictor plate races pose certain challenges for the driver," said
Schrader. "You race flat-footed around the entire track, but you’re always
in a pack of cars. That is the first challenge because you have no room to
slip up like you do on the short tracks. You give the slightest tap at
these tracks and you’re going to cause a 20-car pile up.

"Talladega has been pretty good to me in the past. My first Winston Cup win
came here in 1988, so of course it is one of my favorite tracks. I like
running the fast speeds that Talladega produces, but I am always wary of
running side-by-side with a pack of cars at almost 200 mph. You have to be
if you want to finish this race."

CREW CHIEF SHOP TALK:
"Talladega has been a good track for the Skoal Racing team," said Sam Johns.
"The team has improved on their qualifying performance each time they’ve
returned to Talladega. The team captured the pole position at last fall’s
race. Now, if we can only get our finishes to match the qualifying
performance. I’m certainly optimistic for a solid run after testing here
last week."

SKOAL RACING TEAM NEWS:
The Skoal Racing team will race the same car that sat on the pole at
Talladega Superspeedway last year and finished sixth in this year’s Daytona
500.

Schrader will compete in the Touchstone Energy 300 Busch Series event on
Saturday in the No. 15 Oakwood Homes Monte Carlo.
