IRL, Indy 500: Pennzoil Racing Team Practice Notes, Day 3

19 May 1999

The Pennzoil Panther Pack wrapped up day 3 of practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway a bit early today. The Pack only turned 19 laps today because weather was playing havoc with the cars at the 2 1/2 mile oval.

"When we went out at noon we had already decided just to run a short bit and see what the weather was going to do. The winds were high and we were not able to do some comparisons on set-up that we had hoped so we shortened the time on the track and gave the pit crew time to practice their pit stops for the Coors Light Pit Stop Challenge" said driver Scott Goodyear.

"I got to spend some time with our Chief Engineer Andy Brown and get preparation in for tomorrow, weather permitting." Goodyear posted the 5th fastest speed of the day at 220.848, 40.152 seconds. Goodyear had his quickest day on Opening Day, Saturday with a time of 224.405.

Goodyear and the Panther Pack had some very special guests in their pit on Sunday. Goodyear had invited out Shania Twain's band to spend the day with the Panther Pack and get an inside look at the Pep Boys Indy Racing League.

"This was a dream day for me" said bass player Andy Cichon. "I have always been a huge motor sports fan and to spend time talking with Scott Goodyear...Wow." The bands day didn't end at the track. They were invited to the Treadway Racing Party at Sullivan's Steakhouse on Sunday evening where they met other racing idols; Arie Luyendyk, Eddie Cheever Jr. and Sam Schmidt. The fun will continue tonite when Goodyear, Luyendyk and Schmidt will take in the concert at Deer Creek Music Center.

Pennzoil Panther Drivers Scott Goodyear and Dave Steele will be signing autographs tomorrow morning at the FanFest, located inside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The drivers will sign autographs from 10:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. inside the Pennzoil area. You can also pose with Scott's #4 racing machine for your very own hero card.
