'Back to the Future' With Wireless

PARIS, ORACLE APPSWORLD, Feb. 14 At the inaugural Oracle AppsWorld
Paris conference, more than 6000 visitors have the chance to take a sneak-peak
at the wirelessly-enabled car of the future in the Wireless Pavilion. While
the "smart" car can't take you back to the future, it is capable of saving you
in an emergency or taking the pain out of mechanical problems. Ericsson,
Motorola, Nokia, Oracle and Volvo have collaborated to design the
proof-of-concept model for exhibition. In the case of an emergency, Short
Messaging Service (SMS) messages can be transmitted from the car to any mobile
device using an Oracle database. When problems arise, such as mechanical
problems or a low fuel reading, sensors scattered throughout this
state-of-the-art prototype will emit SMS messages automatically.
