New Look, More Horsepower for 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera Models; Legendary Sportscars Get 3.6-Liter Engine and Turbo-Inspired Design

    ATLANTA, May 29 All 2002 Porsche(R) 911(R) Carrera(R)
models arriving in dealerships this September will sport a larger, more
powerful engine and a new look inspired by the 911 Turbo supercar. These
models include the 911 Carrera Coupe and Cabriolet and the all-wheel drive 911
Carrera 4 Coupe and Cabriolet models.
For 2002, Porsche has enlarged the displacement of the six-cylinder,
horizontally opposed boxer engine in the 911 Carrera models to 3.6 liters from
3.4 liters and increased horsepower from 300 to 320. The 911 Carrera models
are already among the world's quickest and fastest sportscars, and the larger
engine in the 2002 versions will boost performance further.
The 2002 911 Carrera models keep their unmistakable 911 profile and adopt
the headlight design of the 911 Turbo, plus a newly shaped front end, widened
rear end panel, and redesigned oval exhaust tailpipes. In the Cabriolet
models, a glass rear window with integral defroster replaces the polycarbonate
window.
Porsche projects zero-to-100 km/h acceleration in 5.0 seconds for the 911
Carrera and the all-wheel drive 911 Carrera 4 coupe models, with the Cabriolet
versions achieving zero-to-100 km/h in 5.2 seconds. The top track speed
increases from 174 mph (280 km/h) to 178 mph (285 km/h) for all versions with
the manual transmission. A five-speed Tiptronic(R) S automatic transmission
remains an option for all 911 Carrera models.
