Global Solutions for Sustainable Mobility Conference With Ride & Drive

    SOUTHFIELD, Mich., June 8 Consumer purchase decisions are
affected by an increasing need for better fuel economy, primarily in higher
fuel price markets.  Industry is challenged with meeting regulations and
societal concerns about environmental issues, by improving current technology
and creating new solutions.  Don't miss this opportunity to witness the latest

    ESD The Engineering Society presents EnV 2001: Global Solutions for
Sustainable Mobility Conference and Exposition (EnV 2001).  The conference,
sponsored by General Motors Corporation and U.S. Department of Energy, will be
held Sunday to Wednesday, June 10-13, 2001, at Lawrence Technological
University, 21000 W. 10 Mile Road, Southfield, Michigan.

    EnV 2001 will focus on the technology and global standardization of
environmental vehicles and alternative fuels.  The latest environmental
vehicles will be showcased at a Ride & Drive.  The Ride & Drive will be open
to the public on Sunday, 1 - 5 p.m.  This portion of the event will allow
attendees to drive state-of-the-art electric and hybrid vehicles on a closed
course.

    Dennis R. Minano, V.P. Environmental Energy, General Motors and Chief
Environmental Officer will present the keynote address.  Minano is responsible
for General Motors environmental and energy policies worldwide.  Other
speakers include Lester B. Lave, PhD, Edward Barlow, Jr. and Margo Oge,
Director, Office of Transportation and Air Quality, Office of Air and
Radiation at the United States Environmental Protection Agency.  Dr. Lave is a
professor at Carnegie Mellon University.  His research and teaching focus on a
wide range of environmental and public policy issues.  Dr. Lave will speak
about "What Sells and What Doesn't: An Economic View of Sustainable Mobility."
Mr. Barlow, a leading futurist dedicated to assisting organizations and
communities prepare for the world tomorrow, will address societal acceptance
of technological change.  Ms. Oge has been a champion for clean air and the
environment throughout her career.

    Numerous technical presentations will address how energy, environment,
infrastructure and economics impact and are impacted by society, public policy
and technology.  Some of the topics included in the sessions are:  "Electric
Bikes Worldwide: Status & Prospectus;" "Comprehensive Transportation Solutions
for the Digital Age;" "Application of Ultra-small EV Hypermini for Personal-
city Use."

    The cost for ESD members is $450 or $225 daily.  The cost for non-members
is $500 or $275 daily.  The student daily rate is $50.  Press is welcome.  The
