Texans See Lower Gas Prices for 4th of July Holiday
HOUSTON--June 29, 2001--Texans traveling this Fourth of July holiday will see lower prices at the pump.The current statewide average price for a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline is $1.46, a 14 cents decrease from last month's price of $1.60 a gallon. It is ten cents less than what motorists were paying last year.
The 36.6 million travelers planning to take a trip 50 miles or more from home this July 4th is slightly more than the 36.3 million estimated to have traveled last year.
Of those traveling, 31.8 million are expected to go by motor vehicle as compared to 31.5 million in 2000. Another 4.8 million plan to go by air, train or bus, the same number as a year ago.
The national average price for self-serve regular gasoline is $1.52, down 14 cents from last July 4th average of $1.66.
"Traditionally, many Americans combine the July 4th holiday with their summer vacation, and this year should be no different," says Rose Rougeau, a spokesperson for AAA Texas.
