BMW Reports Record Six-Month Sales, Accelerates Past 100,000 Unit Milepost; June Sales Skyrocket 32 Percent and Year-to-Date Sales Increase 21 Percent
WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., July 3 BMW of North America, LLC reported record sales for the first six months of 2001, as strong demand for the company's vehicles continued to define the first half of the year. BMW posted sales of 20,250 vehicles in June, compared to 15,334 in June 2000, an increase of 32 percent. Year-to-date, the company reported sales of 107,257, an increase of 21 percent, compared to 88,783 vehicles sold in the same period a year ago. "It took almost a full year for BMW to sell 100,000 units in 1996, the first time we accomplished this achievement. Since then, our sales volume has nearly doubled and this year, we've hit that mark in less than six months," explained Tom Purves, chairman and CEO of BMW (US) Holding Corp. This marks the 33rd consecutive month that BMW has surpassed its own monthly sales records. Automobile Sales BMW reported June automobile sales of 17,054 compared to 13,109 a year ago, an increase of 30 percent. Automobile sales for the first half of 2001 were strong at 88,574, up 10 percent over the 80,619 reported in the same period a year ago. Sales of BMW 3 Series models were up 30 percent for the month while sales of BMW's popular Z3 roadsters jumped 61 percent, contributing to the company's sales strength. Sports Activity Vehicle Sales BMW also reported June sales of 3,196 Sports Activity Vehicles, an increase of 44 percent over the 2,225 vehicles reported last June. Year-to-date, SAV sales more than doubled; BMW reported sales of 18,683 vehicles, an increase of 129 percent compared to the 8,164 reported in the first six months of 2000. Certified Pre-owned Vehicles Sales The company also reported June sales of Certified Pre-Owned vehicles of 3,306 units, compared to last 4,253 units reported last June. Year-to-date, BMW has retailed 19,243 Certified Pre-Owned vehicles compared to 23,008 in 2000. The decline reflects a reduction in the number of off-lease vehicles coming back into the market.
