Toyota Reports Best-Ever July Sales And Breaks the
One-Million Sales Mark
TORRANCE, Calif., Aug. 1 Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A.,
Inc., reported today that July marked the first time in its 44-year history in
the U.S. that it surpassed the one-million sales mark this early into the
third quarter.
Toyota reported its strongest July ever with sales of 143,283 units, up
5.8 percent over last July. Calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) sales stand at
1,008,664 units, an increase of 6.3 percent over the same period last year.
"The first half of this year's new-car game had everyone on the edge of
their seats, but the second half could be even more exciting," said Jim Press,
TMS executive vice president and COO.
He added that Toyota and Lexus dealers are enjoying a bump in sales from
new models such as the car-based Highlander sport utility vehicle (SUV) and
the LS 430 luxury sedan, which are helping them maintain their lead over all
other makes in sales per outlet.
The Toyota Division outperformed last July with 126,240 units sold, up
7.1 percent.
Toyota Division's light trucks led the sales charge with best-ever July
sales of 59,669 units, up 26.9 percent from last year. The redesigned Tacoma
compact pickup posted strong July sales of 13,402 units, up 7.2 percent. The
Tundra full-size pickup enjoyed best-ever July sales of 9,807, up
10.0 percent. The RAV4 compact SUV recorded best-ever July sales of 7,361, an
increase of 116.3 percent. The all-new Highlander mid-size SUV and Sequoia
full-size SUV recorded sales of 8,025 and 5,821 units, respectively.
The Prius gas/electric hybrid sedan celebrated the one-year anniversary of
its launch in the U.S. market, with 1,037 units delivered in July, an increase
of 23.3 percent. Sales of the Corolla compact sedan held steady at 18,233, up
2.1 percent.
Passenger cars led sales for the Lexus Division, with 10,397 units sold,
up 15.5 percent over the same period last year. The flagship LS 430 luxury
sedan posted 2,260 sales, an increase of 136.9 percent. Consumers are taking
full advantage of the summer weather in the all-new SC 430 hardtop
convertible, which posted sales of 1,010 units.
Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 61.5 percent of total
July sales.
