Safeway Offers Parents Reminder on Child Safety

WASHINGTON, Aug. 9 With the recent spate of accidents
involving children and cars this summer, Safeway is providing reminders to
parents about the inherent dangers of kids being left in and around cars
through messages printed on selected quart containers of Lucerne whole and
low-fat milk (the company's private label brand).
One panel of the carton is devoted to child safety awareness, instructing
parents to never leave kids alone in or to play around vehicles for the
following reasons:

    * temperatures in cars can reach dangerous levels in minutes,
    * kids can set cars in motion,
    * your child can be abducted if left unattended, and
    * drivers in other vehicles have difficulty seeing kids when backing up.

The messages are provided by Kids 'N Cars, a non-profit organization whose
mission is to pursue a greater level of public safety by addressing vehicle
related, non-traffic incidents that lead to death and injury when children are
left unattended in or around a vehicle. Kids 'N Cars is based in San
Francisco and is a project of the Trauma Foundation.
Safeway's Eastern Division employs approximately 11,000 people and
operates 127 stores, including 16 in the District of Columbia, 68 in Maryland
and 43 in Virginia. Safeway, a Fortune 50 company, is one of the largest food
and drug retailers in North America with annualized sales exceeding $31
billion. The company currently operates nearly 1,700 stores in the United
States and Canada with a total workforce of approximately 165,000 employees.
