GM Service Parts Operations Announces New Parts Distribution Center In California

Los Angeles - General Motors Service Parts Operations has selected property in Rancho Cucamonga as the location of a new Parts Distribution Center, according to Ronald T. West, general director of warehousing and distribution for SPO. This new 404,000 square foot facility with an operating space of 384,000 square feet and office area at 20,000 square feet will handle automotive replacement part shipments to more than 335 GM dealerships in sections of Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah. Plans for the construction of the new PDC will begin in November 2001.

West says that several factors influenced the decision to locate the new facility in the southern California area. "The cooperative work between the leadership of UAW Local 6645 and Santa Fe Springs management was an important contributing factor. Local and state considerations for support in assisting with funds for employee training and necessary roadway improvements were also instrumental in providing a favorable business case. In addition, we have maintained a strong relationship with the local and state government representatives in California. We look forward to continuing our strong association with the people of the southern California area.

"As we implement our strategy to provide world-class service to our GM dealers by realigning our distribution network, creating a warehouse template layout of lean and common processes and improving productivity, the impact on our employees is an important consideration. When we look at the business case for relocating a facility, we also consider the impact on the community in which we reside," adds West.

SPO opened several new PDCs around the country since 1999 -- Charlotte, N.C.; Jackson, Miss.; Los Angeles, CA; Memphis, Tenn.; and Columbus, Ohio. Beginning in March 2001, the Cincinnati, Ohio PDC began serving to more than 543 dealers. The new Martinsburg, West Virginia PDC became fully operational in August this year. Construction on a new PDC in the Fort Worth, Texas area began in October 2000 and is expected to begin operations in January 2002.

Construction plans currently underway for the new PDC in Falls Township, Pennsylvania are expected to be completed by year's end to meet shipping by March 2002. March 29, 2001 marked the ground breaking for a new PDC in the Chicago, Illinois area, which is slated to begin shipping in July 2002.
