PPG Fiber Glass Roving Reduces Costs, Saves Time, Improves Strength

PITTSBURGH--Oct. 2, 2001--PPG Industries has introduced a fiber glass spray-up roving that has demonstrated faster application with less resin and increased fiber glass content for enhanced structural integrity of the finished part compared with its previous rovings, according to the company.
New Hybon 6400 fiber glass roving was developed to meet fabricators' needs for improved processing to reduce costs and save time, according to Mark A. Williams, director, global marketing, fiber glass thermoset products.
"We worked with customers on trials to evaluate performance of Hybon 6400 roving in actual use," Williams said. "They reported being able to roll out the glass as much as 15 percent faster than with our previous roving."
Williams said the new PPG fiber glass roving has proprietary chromium-free sizing and low solubility that allows resin to be absorbed quickly and completely for faster processing.
"Hybon 6400 roving conforms readily to the mold, and has been shown to result in up to 3 percent higher glass content with a comparable reduction in resin demand than our previous roving," he said. "Because of consistent glass distribution with less resin drainage, critical vertical surfaces receive the penetration needed to meet strength requirements."
Hybon 6400 roving is designed to perform better than standard rovings in low-styrene resin systems, Williams said. It chops cleanly, has been shown to be less prone to break, and has high lubricity to minimize equipment drag, he added.
"As a result, there is less wear and tear on equipment to improve its longevity and less operator fatigue," Williams said.
New Hybon 6400 fiber glass roving for spray-up application by PPG is available through PPG distributors in North America as well as for direct sale.
