GM do Brasil Celebrates Production Of 100,000 Chevrolet Celta

Gravatai, Brazil - GM do Brasil's Gravatai Automotive Complex celebrated the production of the one hundred thousandth (100,000) Chevrolet Celta. GM do Brasil employees, dealers and suppliers met to celebrate a significant milestone for the team. The vehicle will remain on display at the plant as a memento of this milestone. It will be auctioned at a later date as part of a fundraising campaign to construct a new children's hospital in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

"We're very proud of the Chevrolet Celta. Its success motivates our team to continue innovating and collaborating with our partners in bringing to market exciting vehicles," said Walter Wieland, managing director, GM do Brasil.

The Chevrolet Celta is considered the most successful launch in the company's history. More than 88,000 Celtas were sold during the first 12 months in the market, nearly 80% of them via celta.com.br. The Celta leads year-to-date sales in its segment ahead of VW's Gol Special and Fiat's Uno Mille and the new Palio. It participates in the subcompact segment of 3-door, hatchback, 1-liter engine cars; and is sold in three versions: "basic," "more" and new for the 2002 model year, the "super" optional package.

The Celta is produced at one of GM's most efficient plants in the world through a unique manufacturing system implemented in conjunction with 17 co-located suppliers. From collaboration with suppliers in its codesign and manufacturing to collaboration with dealers in the implementation of the first high volume direct Internet sales model of the automotive world, the business story behind the Celta's success underscores GMB's drive for innovation.

GM do Brasil , established in 1925, is comprised of manufacturing complexes at Sao Caetano do Sul, San Jose dos Campos, Mogi das Cruces and Gravatai: two parts distribution centers at Sorocaba and Mogi das Cruzes; a Proving Ground at Indaiatuba, administrative offices at several locations and Banco General Motors in Sao Paolo. The company markets vehicles under the Chevrolet and GMC brands.
