AAA Texas Survey Shows Lower Pump Prices

HOUSTON--Feb. 12, 2002--Pump prices in Texas dropped a penny overall from last month, according to AAA Texas Monthly Fuel Gauge Report.
The current statewide average price for regular self-serve is $1.06 a gallon -- compared to last month's $1.07 a gallon. A year ago, Texans were shelling out $1.39 a gallon -- 33 cents more.
The nationwide average price of self-serve regular gasoline is $1.12 a gallon. This compares to an average price of $1.48 -- a year ago.
"A soft economy and lower demand for fuel continues to push gas prices lower in many parts of the state," says Rose Rougeau, spokesperson for AAA Texas. "Motorists can expect to see price fluctuations at the pumps -- at least until the economy stabilizes."
According to AAA's Fuel Gauge Report, the most expensive gas can be purchased in Hawaii at $1.65 a gallon and the least expensive can be found in Georgia at just under a dollar at 99 cents.
AAA's Fuel Gauge Report is based on data from the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS) -- the nation's most comprehensive source of petroleum pricing information.
AAA Texas, an affiliate of the American Automobile Association, has been serving Texans since 1902. Today, AAA Texas' members benefit by the organization's roadside assistance service, travel agency, financial products, automotive pricing, buying and financing, trip planning services, and traffic safety programs. Information about these products and services is available on AAA Texas' Web site at www.aaa-texas.com.
