2002 New York International Auto Show: How to Get There

NEW YORK, Feb. 22 -- Automobiles are unquestionably the main attraction at the 2002 New York International Automobile Show, to be held March 29 through April 7 at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City. Yet, many show-goers do not actually drive to the Auto Show, they come by land, water and air. So for those who aren't sure where to park, or those arriving by train, bus, or plane, here are some helpful hints.

By Car: From the North (Westchester, Connecticut, Massachusetts) 95 South (via the Cross Bronx Expressway) to the George Washington Bridge:

At the approach to the GWB, bear right to the lower level. Exit at the last exit in New York, Henry Hudson Parkway South 9A. Follow Parkway South to 42nd street. Turn left, go one block to 11th Ave., turn right. Saw Mill River/Henry Hudson Parkway/Route 9A:follow 9A South to 42nd Street. Turn left and go one block to 11th Ave., and turn right.

New York State Thruway/Major Deegan Expressway/Route 87: Major Deegan Expressway to George Washington Bridge exit. Stay in right lane towards lower level. Exit at the last exit in New York, Henry Hudson Parkway South 9A. Follow Parkway South to 42nd Street. Turn left. Go one block to 11th Avenue and turn right.

From the South (New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Etc.)

95 North to the New Jersey Turnpike. Exit at the Lincoln Tunnel. When exiting the tunnel, bear left. Follow signs for uptown or northbound to 42nd Street. Turn left onto 42nd Street until you reach 11th Avenue and turn left.

George Washington Bridge to Henry Hudson Parkway South 9A. At 42nd Street, turn left. Go one block to 11th Avenue and turn right.

From Queens and Long Island

Queens-Midtown Tunnel: Take Southbound or Downtown exit to 34th Street and turn right. Go west to 12th Avenue and turn right onto 39th Street.

Queensboro/59th Street Bridge: Take 60/61st Street Exit. Go to 5th Avenue alongside Central Park to 59th Street. Turn right onto 59th Street to 7th Avenue and turn left. Go two blocks to 57th Street and turn right. Follow 57th Street to 11th Avenue and turn left.

From Staten Island

Verrazano-Narrows Bridge eastbound to the Gowanus Expressway, to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. Exit westbound to the West Side Highway/12th Avenue. At 39th Street, turn right. Go one block to 11th Avenue.

Parking:

Special Auto Show parking rates follow for the Manhattan Plaza Parking Garage, located on W. 42nd Street between Ninth and Tenth Ave. Sunday - Wednesday a special flat rate of $8.00 is offered after 5:00 PM, and Thursday through Saturday a flat rate of $12.00 is offered after 5:00 PM. Daily, after 10:00 AM up to 1 hour; $7.00, up to 2 hours; $10.00, up to 3 hours; $13.00; 3-10 hours; $16.00 ; rates include tax. A free shuttle bus from the garage to the Javits Center, sponsored by the Auto Show, will run Friday, March 29th from 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM, Saturday, March 30th and Saturday April 6th from 11:00 AM - 11:00 PM; Sunday March 31st and April 7th, 10:00 AM - 7:15 PM; and Monday, April 1st through Friday, April 5th from 6:00 PM - 11:00 PM.

By Train:

Metro North Railroad will offer a 35% discounted special event ticket package, including a discounted rail fare and Auto show coupon, which will be sold at ticket booths on all lines. Adults will be charged the applicable excursion rail fare, plus $6.00 for Show admission. Children ages 5-11 will be charged .50 cents each way on any off-peak train when accompanied by a parent or guardian (four children per adult; additional children pay applicable excursion fare), and will be charged $2.00 for show admission. Children under age four will travel free of charge and be charged $2.00 for show admission.

Excursion rail tickets will be sold at all Metro-North ticket offices as well as over the Internet by Metro-North E-ticketing System. Metro-North commutation ticket holders and employees with valid rail passes can purchase the event ticket from any station on the Harlem, Hudson or New Haven lines having open ticket offices.

The Long Island Rail Road will offer a special Auto Show discount package, including rail fare and admission to the show, at a cost of $15 in zones 1-11 and $21 in zones 12-14. As a special Auto show promotion with WALK 97.5 radio, LIRR will distribute entry forms for a special drawing offering a six-day trip for two to Puerto Rico; in addition, call-in winners will receive two free Auto Show tickets and complimentary round trip rail passes to the Show on the LIRR. By Ferry:

New York Waterway, whose New York terminal is located just one block from the Javits Center, will sell a combination round-trip ferry and show admission ticket for $20.00 for adults and $9.00 for children, with an additional $6.00 charged for parking. By Bus:

M34: Runs east/west on 34th Street. Buses stop on 11th Avenue, outside the Javits Center and at Penn Station.

M42: Runs east/west on 42nd street. Stops directly outside the Javits Center and at Grand Central Station.

Port Authority:

New Jersey Transit and other buses arrive at the Port Authority terminal at 42nd Street between 8th and 9th Avenues. The M42 will bring you from there to the Javits Center.
