The Lexus ES 300 is America's Top-Selling Luxury Car
TORRANCE, Calif., June 4, 2002 -- With calendar-year-to-date (CYTD)
sales through May of 29,320, the Lexus ES 300 sedan remains the top-selling
luxury car in America. Lexus also has the top-selling luxury sport utility
vehicle with the segment-dominating RX 300 with CYTD sales of 30,968.
Due in part to the chart-topping sales of the ES 300 and RX 300, Lexus
shattered last year's best-ever May sales record with an increase of 7.5
percent, or 21,798 units. For the year, Lexus is up 7.0 percent with sales
of 96,962.
The record-breaking sales reports come on the heels of another
accolade for the luxury marque. The J.D. Power and Associates' 2002
Initial Quality Study (IQS) revealed last week that the Lexus LS 430 was
the most problem-free vehicle for the third year in a row. Additionally,
Lexus was the only luxury nameplate to win an IQS segment, with the LS 430,
GS 430/300 and LX 470 topping their classes. The annual study measures
vehicle owner reported problems during the first three months of ownership.
"May was an outstanding month for Lexus. We not only have the
top-selling luxury car and SUV in our stable, but the most problem-free as
well," said Denny Clements, Lexus group vice president and general manager.
"Lexus set the standard when we came on the scene 12 years ago, and we
haven't let up."
Not only are new-vehicle sales on the rise for Lexus, but Certified
Pre-Owned (CPO) sales are making a mark as well. Calendar-year-to-date CPO
sales are up 36.8 percent compared to the same period last year, to 17,371.
May sales totaled 3,319, up 11.5 percent over May 2001.
Lexus has become synonymous with luxury since its introduction in
1989. By offering the finest quality luxury vehicles and providing
benchmark customer service, Lexus has become the top-selling luxury
nameplate in the United States for two years in a row. Lexus and its 196
dealers have consistently achieved the highest honors for both the products
they sell and the customer service they provide as rated by the independent
research firm of J.D. Power and Associates.
