Cummins receives orders for 28 low-emissions bus engines for California

VANCOUVER, June 13 - Cummins Westport Inc., a joint venture of Cummins Inc. of Columbus, Indiana and Westport Innovations Inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia, announced today that it has received orders for 28 low-emissions, natural gas engines for transit buses for two California locations.

The orders are for 280 horsepower, 8.3-liter Cummins Westport C Gas Plus engines. The engines will be installed in new, 40-foot transit buses manufactured by New Flyer. Twenty of the engines will be used at Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport and eight will be used by the Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District. The local Cummins distributor involved in the orders is Cummins West.

For Mineta San Jose International Airport, the new buses will be used for shuttle service between parking lots and the terminals. The new buses will replace older diesel buses, which will be retired. After delivery of the new buses between December 2002 and March 2003, half of the Airport's fleet of 40 buses will be natural gas powered.

"U.S. airport shuttle buses have become an important market segment for our natural gas engines," said Hugh Foden, President of Cummins Westport. "We expect significant additional demand because of the need to improve air quality around airports." Including San Jose, more than 70 C Gas Plus engines are on order or in service for buses at U.S. airports. The other airports are Denver, Seattle and Dallas-Fort Worth.

For Santa Cruz, the order represents the first purchase of natural gas buses by the Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District, which operates a fleet of 123 buses. The new low-emissions buses will be used in general service and will replace 20-year-old diesel buses, which will be retired. Delivery is scheduled for July.

Cummins Inc. is a global power leader in engines, electrical power generation systems and related technologies. Westport Innovations is the leading developer of natural gas fuel systems for diesel engines. Cummins Westport, formed in 2001, develops and markets low-emissions alternative fuel engines manufactured by Cummins.
