Face Recognition Technology Can End Fake ID's

LITTLETON, Mass., July 1 Viisage Technology, Inc., the world leader in face-recognition technology and identification systems and solutions, announced today that a fourth U.S. state will adopt its advanced face recognition solution as part of the state's ongoing digital driver's license system. Adding the face recognition capability to their system will greatly improve the security of the overall system and reduce identity theft.

In order to provide the most secure and tamper-proof identification cards, the state selected face recognition technology over other biometric technologies because of face recognition's convenient and non-intrusive nature, as well as its proven capability to deter fraud.

Viisage's face recognition solution will allow the state to perform one- to-one verification at all Viisage Digital Imaging Workstations throughout the state in less than five seconds. Viisage's software will convert the image and verify it against an existing database. As the person's face is being captured, the driver's license number and/or identification number is simultaneously used to retrieve the enrolled images from the central server. Additionally, the state will have the capability to conduct a one-to-many search to check for individuals with multiple identities, which will help to reduce identity theft and fraud.

According to Iftikhar Ahmad, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Viisage's Solution for Smart and Secure Identification (3SI) Business Unit, "The adoption of this advanced security feature will allow the state to produce secure identification documents, protecting citizens from potential identity theft."

Ahmad continues, "With the addition of this state, Viisage now has six state contracts for large database face recognition applications, four of which are Viisage's driver's license customers. This supports our expectations for rapid growth in the market segment for large database face recognition applications."
