``Ultimate Road Trip'' Contest

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--July 31, 2002-- Thales (tal-less) Navigation, global provider of Magellan® consumer and Ashtech® professional GPS solutions, announces the call for entries for the Magellan "Ultimate Road Trip" contest. The contest will award one grand prize winner a spot in a classic on-road experience: "Magellan Presents the 2002 Jaos Adventure Rally." Anyone can enter the GPS-based rally, which is designed for novices, but Magellan will award one adventurous person an all-expenses paid trip to represent Magellan in the rally. The grand prize is valued at $3,500.

In addition to a spot in the rally and a vehicle to drive in it, Magellan will fly the winner and his/her choice of navigator to Las Vegas. A one-day event, "Magellan Presents the 2002 Jaos Adventure Rally" is held on Saturday, December 14, 2002, outside Las Vegas in Laughlin, Nevada, in conjunction with the Ramada Express Hotel & Casino International Rally, the premier rally event in the United States. Ramada Express Hotel & Casino in Laughlin, which is the base camp for the rally, is providing accommodations for the grand prize winner for three days/two nights.

"`Magellan Presents the 2002 Jaos Adventure Rally' combines so many exciting activities -- driving, sleuthing, GPS navigating and a little luck -- so we thought it would be fun to give someone who best embraces all these characteristics the chance to represent Magellan in the rally," said Karen Carbonnet, Thales Navigation vice president of corporate communications. "The rally encompasses many activities that our GPS customers participate in, so our sponsorship is a natural fit. And because the rally is a great adventure, we created the `Ultimate Road Trip' contest to let more people know about it."

"Magellan Presents the 2002 Jaos Adventure Rally" takes entrants over a diverse course where the coordinates, but not the destination, are known. Because a sense of adventure is a de facto entry requirement, Magellan is seeking one gutsy individual to represent the company in the rally. To enter the contest, individuals simply log on to the "Ultimate Road Trip" contest page on the Magellan Web site, www.magellangps.com, and explain (in 200 words or less) a past adventure that merits them a place in the rally. Ten finalists will be selected by an independent review panel and contacted for a final interview to select the grand prize winner. Each finalist will receive a Magellan SporTrak(TM) GPS unit.

"Magellan Presents the 2002 Jaos Adventure Rally" is a hi-tech scavenger hunt that combines basic driving skills with technological savvy, logic and a little luck. Entrants use Magellan GPS units to locate landmarks, where they will be given the coordinates for the next landmark, as well as answers to clues and trivia questions and occasionally a card for a Poker hand. Correct answers, timing and the Poker hand all factor into the overall score to determine a rally winner. This is not a race for time, and the course is designed to take participants over 250 miles at a low speed. In fact, if participants arrive at landmarks too soon, they will be penalized. The Magellan "Ultimate Road Trip" contest is open to U.S. residents, 18 years of age or older with a valid driver's license. Only one entry per person; multiple entries will be discarded. See complete Magellan Ultimate Road Trip Contest Rules and Regulations for details.
