ATLANTA, Aug. 5 -- The Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo -- the third model series from Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG -- will be presented to the public for the first time at the Paris Motor Show, which will open on Sept. 28, 2002. In preparation for the unveiling, Porsche has announced pricing for both models. The Cayenne S base price in the United States is $55,900 ($78,250 Canadian), while the base U.S. price for the Cayenne Turbo is $88,900 ($125,100 Canadian).

Outstanding Interior Concept

Porsche has gone to great lengths to ensure the Cayenne interior reflects the unmistakable quality of Porsche design. The ignition lock is, as always, positioned to the left of the three-spoke steering wheel, and two large round instrument dials with a central multi-functional display dominate the instrument panel. Standard equipment includes an alarm system, on-board computer, electric windows, electrically adjustable front seats and an expansive leather interior. Automatic air-conditioning and a CD radio with twin tuner and 10 speakers are also standard.

The luggage space -- fitted with a luggage net and boot cover -- has a capacity of 540 liters. The rear seat backrests can fold down with a 40/60 split, which increases the load capacity to a maximum of 1,770 liters. Also, it is not necessary to fully open to rear hatch when loading smaller objects. The Cayenne's rear window opens upwards, which provides a second option for accessing the luggage compartment.

Leather and Aluminum Interior

Other standard Cayenne Turbo features include Bi-Xenon headlights with cornering light, metallic paint, and a new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system. The new PCM system features a navigation module, an on-board computer, antenna diversity, and a customized Bose® 350-watt surround sound system with 14 speakers. The leather interior has aluminum details in areas such as the door and control panel trim. Other standard equipment includes an electrically adjustable and heated steering wheel, electrically adjustable front seat with memory function and heated seats, a heated rear seat, and ParkAssist for precision parking.

Cayenne Features Porsche Traction Management Permanent Four-Wheel Drive Both vehicles combine excellent on-road dynamics with outstanding off-pavement driving qualities. Porsche has managed to achieve this unique combination in the sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment through the Porsche Traction Management (PTM) permanent four-wheel drive system that is standard on both models. In basic mode, PTM feeds 62 percent of the engine power to the rear wheels and 38 percent to the front wheels.

A multiple-plate clutch is able to vary the distribution of power according to specific driving conditions. In addition to responding to lack of traction, PTM, which has a speed reducer for off-pavement driving, also has sensors that measure the vehicle's speed, its lateral acceleration, the steering angle, and operation of the accelerator pedal. As a result, PTM always calculates the optimum locking action and distributes the drive forces as required to the front and rear axles.

The Cayenne S features a 250 kW (340 horsepower DIN) V-8 engine. Thanks to the new six-speed Tiptronic® S automatic transmission, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 7.2 seconds. The top test-track speed is 242 km/h or 150 mph. The 4.5-liter engine generates a high level of torque even at low engine speeds. It produces a maximum of 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque between 2,500 and 5,500 rpm.

In the United States, the Tiptronic S transmission as well as a multi- function steering wheel and other luxury content are standard equipment. European pricing is 60,204 euro including Value Added Tax (VAT) in Germany (base EU price: 51,900 euro).

Cayenne Turbo Offers More Performance and Features

In the United States, the Cayenne Turbo includes an outstanding range of standard luxury and performance equipment for a base price of $88,900, and the Canadian base price is $125,100. European pricing is 99,876 euro including VAT in Germany (base EU price: 86,100 euro). Under the hood, eight cylinders work with two exhaust gas turbochargers complete with intercoolers to provide 331 kW (450 horsepower DIN) of power. The Turbo sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 5.6 seconds and has a top test-track speed of 266 km/h (165 mph). Dynamic drive force distribution and excellent throttle response are available at all engine speeds, and the engine produces 620 Nm (460 lb-ft) of maximum torque at engine speeds from 2,250 to 4,750 rpm.

In addition to the six-speed Tiptronic transmission, Cayenne Turbo standard equipment includes pneumatic suspension with a self-leveling feature and height adjustment. The pneumatic suspension not only offers extra ground clearance on rough terrain and, thanks to self-leveling, a consistent vehicle position regardless of the load it is carrying, it also ensures enhanced active safety by automatically lowering the vehicle relative to increasing road speed. Incorporating six different ride height levels, the pneumatic suspension adjusts over a range of 116 mm (4.57 inches). Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), a new electronically variable damping system that continually adjusts damper forces relative to surface conditions and driving style, is offered as a standard feature in combination with the pneumatic suspension.

Cayenne Production in Leipzig

While the Cayenne S and the Cayenne Turbo will be produced at the new Porsche facility in Leipzig, Germany, their engines will be built in Zuffenhausen. Porsche has invested around 128 million euro in the new plant, which will officially open Aug. 20, 2002. Porsche Leipzig includes a new Customer Center, where Porsche customers from around the world will be able to pick up their new Cayenne SUVs directly from the factory. To familiarize themselves with the vehicle's handling and technical features, customers can test drive a Cayenne with an instructor on a test track adjacent to the Customer Center and on the neighboring off-pavement track.
