U.S. Army Takes Delivery of More Hybrid Electric HMMWVs

GOLDEN, Colo., Aug. 29 UQM TECHNOLOGIES, INC. announced today that two additional technology demonstration hybrid electric High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV pronounced HUMVEE®), developed and produced by PEI Electronics, a unit of Integrated Defense Technologies, Inc. and powered by UQM® electric propulsion motors, generators and power electronic inverters are being delivered to the U. S. Army for performance testing and evaluation at the Yuma Proving Grounds. Two previously delivered hybrid electric HMMWVs have been undergoing rigorous testing at Aberdeen Proving Grounds since June. The hybrid electric HMMWVs incorporate one 75 kW UQM® generator and two 75 kW UQM® propulsion motors, one per axle. Each UQM® motor or generator is controlled by a UQM® electronic inverter which manages the operating characteristics of the motor or generator. Funding for the design upgrade of PEI's prototype system and fabrication of the first four vehicles was provided by the Department of Defense's Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) based in Warren, Michigan. AM General, the manufacturer of the HMMWV, is the Prime Contractor. PEI Electronics is responsible for the complete hybrid drive systems design and integration, electronics component design and the energy management system for the vehicles. UQM Technologies provides the propulsion motors, generators and power electronic inverters under subcontract to PEI Electronics.

The delivery of these vehicles marks the culmination of a one year effort to enhance the design and performance characteristics of earlier hybrid electric HMMWVs. The contract effort, led by AM General, the manufacturer of the HUMVEE® since 1995, is focused on meeting customer performance specifications in a more production ready design. The hybrid electric HMMWV features on-board power generation capability sufficient to operate field hospitals, telecommunications centers, auxiliary radar equipment and the like, and has demonstrated fuel efficiency improvements in excess of 30 percent depending on the vehicle driving cycle.

William G. Rankin, UQM Technologies' President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "The benefits of hybrid electric propulsion including improved vehicle performance, stealth operation, reduced fuel consumption and the availability of significant on-board electric power are gaining broader recognition throughout the military and this order for an additional hybrid electric HMMWV is just the beginning of what we expect will be a growing number of orders from various military organizations. The hybrid electric HMMWV is one of a number of applications of our technology in military vehicles, such as our recently announced role as propulsion systems supplier for two unmanned ground combat vehicle programs, which we see as a significant and growing opportunity for the Company."
