Toyota Announces Best-Ever Sales Month
- Shatters Record Set Just Three Months EarlierTORRANCE, Calif., Sept. 4 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported its best-ever sales month in 45 years of business in the U.S. with 186,599 vehicles sold, up 13.2 percent and smashing the previous mark set just three months ago by 17,071 units. Calendar-year-to- date sales now stand at 1,221,005, up 4.1 percent."The auto industry continues to drive the economy for two basic reasons," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. "First, consumers are discovering across-the-board variety and quality that has never been better. Second, and most important, they've discovered that a new-car purchase is more affordable now, than it's been in the last 24 years."
The Toyota Division celebrated a best-ever sales month with 162,476 units sold, up 13.4 percent over the same period last year. The Lexus Division also enjoyed its best-ever month with 24,123 sales, an increase of 12.0 percent over last August.
Toyota Division passenger cars enjoyed best-ever August sales with 87,631 units sold, up 15.6 percent. Camry, the number one selling car in America, led the charge with best-ever August sales of 45,442, up 27.0 percent. The Corolla compact sedan also enjoyed strong August sales with 27,100 units sold, an increase of 26.7 percent. The Prius gas/electric hybrid sedan enjoyed best-ever August sales with 1,756 units sold, up 29.2 percent.
It was the best-ever selling month for Toyota Division light trucks with 74,845 sales, an increase of 11.0 percent over the same period last year. The Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) achieved it best-ever sales month with 12,401 units sold, up 32.5 percent. The RAV4 compact SUV also reported its best-ever sales month with 10,329, up 25.7 percent. The Tundra full-size pickup had a record-setting August with sales of 11,154, an increase of 9.4 percent. Best-ever August sales of the Sequoia full-size SUV totaled 6,566, up 8.6 percent. Tacoma compact pickup sales totaled 17,034, an increase of 10.3 percent.
The Lexus Division's record-setting sales month was paced by best-ever passenger car sales of 16,048, up 27.4 percent over the same period last year. The ES 300 sedan led the Lexus sales charge with best-ever monthly sales of 7,767, up 97.4 percent. The IS 300 series also reported strong sales of 2,305, an increase of 22.2 percent. The SC 430 hardtop convertible posted sales of 1,290, up 13.1 percent.
Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 56.9 percent of total August sales. There were 28 selling days compared to 27 last August.
