UQM Technologies to Develop Low Cost Fully Integrated High Performance Vehicle Propulsion

GOLDEN, Colo., Sept. 5 UQM TECHNOLOGIES, INC. announced today that it has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a fully integrated 30kW electric propulsion system designed to be manufactured at low cost. The new propulsion system will feature a sine wave controller fully integrated into the motor housing together with UQM's low cost patent pending rotor position sensing technology. The initial project, awarded under the Small Business Innovative Research program, will span a nine month period and consist of initial system design, analysis and sensor hardware demonstration.

Commenting on the award, Jon Lutz, UQM Technologies' Director of Engineering said, "This program capitalizes on concepts developed under other DOE funded programs by integrating a sine wave motor controller into the housing of our high performance and highly efficient permanent magnet motors, resulting in a propulsion system that outperforms current designs with respect to cost, weight, size and power performance while reducing electromagnetic emissions. In addition, the system will feature our patent pending low cost rotor position sensing technology which will provide a substantial cost benefit over conventional position sensing resolvers."
