The Diesel Engine Makes a Comeback

November 2002 (Newstream) -- Remember when a diesel engine meant smelly, noisy irritation? Now, new technological advances are making diesel engines the fuel-efficient solution for today's gas-guzzling cars, trucks and SUVs.

The latest diesel engine technology is giving drivers anywhere from 30 to 50 percent better fuel economy (some get about 50 miles per gallon!). The new engine also makes the same level of noise as other engines. Many experts -- like the California Air Resources Board and AAA -- have endorsed diesel because of its low emission of greenhouse gases.

In Europe, where gas prices are as much as four times higher than they are here, new clean diesel engines are sold on half of all new cars. Many experts in the U.S. predict we'll soon see this technology on our gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs.

During the oil crisis of the 70's, diesel became a popular choice in passenger cars because of its fuel economy. But soon the engine's air and noise pollution overwhelmed us, and as gas prices stabilized, diesel went the way of the Edsel.
