AAA TEXAS: Weekend Gas Watch; Gasoline Prices Drop for First Time in Weeks

HOUSTON--Jan. 17, 2003--For the first time in four weeks, gas prices have taken a downturn, according to the Weekend Gas Watch, compiled by AAA Texas. The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline at popular destinations for motoring trips.
While the Texas average for a gallon of regular self-serve fuel is $1.42 -- the same as last week's average -- prices in many cities have decreased slightly. San Antonio has the least expensive fuel at $1.39 a gallon -- down nearly two cents compared to a week ago. The Alamo City also showed the biggest decrease. Dallas has the most expensive fuel at $1.424 a gallon -- down a tenth of a penny since last week.
"The recent decision by OPEC oil ministers to increase production may have helped soften the rise in gasoline prices," said Rose Rougeau, spokesperson for AAA Texas. "However, the statewide average for a gallon of gasoline remains nearly 35 cents higher than last year's average -- which was $1.07 a gallon -- and the continuing threat of war with Iraq could still drive prices upward."
