January 2003 (Newstream) -- As the North American International Auto Show convenes this week in Detroit, automakers are rolling out their best and brightest, and the theme this year is vehicles that can do just about anything.

You've seen the ads for the big rebates and the zero percent financing, but the fierce competition between automakers extends far beyond price. Due to advancements in computers and electronics, there's a mighty Design and Technological revolution sweeping over Detroit.

One place where manufacturers are finding fertile ground for innovation is in the back of a pickup truck. Once just a steel box. Now manufacturers like Chevy are showing off concept vehicles where innovation is meeting more customers' needs.

The GMC XUV, which isn't a concept but a reality for around $40,000 - has a power sliding rear roof and a midgate that converts this SUV into a pickup. Side doors, hidden compartments, retractable roofs. If you can dream it - they're probably already working on it.
