Hybrid Electric HMMWV Powered by UQM(R) Propulsion Systems Begins Cold Weather Evaluation at the U.S. Army's Cold Regions Test Center

Current Phase of Performance Evaluation to Focus on Operating Characteristics
                          In Harsh Winter Conditions

FREDERICK, Colo., Jan. 22 UQM TECHNOLOGIES, INC. (AMEX: UQM) announced today that one of the U.S. Army
technology demonstration hybrid electric High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled
Vehicles (HMMWV pronounced HUMVEE(R)), developed and produced by IDT-PEI
Electronics, a unit of Integrated Defense Technologies, Inc. and
powered by UQM(R) propulsion motors, generator and power electronic inverters,
has begun cold weather evaluation testing at the Cold Regions Test Center at
Fort Greeley, Alaska. The hybrid electric HMMWV incorporates one 75 kW UQM(R)
generator and two 75 kW UQM(R) propulsion motors, one per axle. Each UQM(R)
motor or generator is controlled by a UQM(R) electronic inverter which manages
the operating characteristics of the motor or generator. The Cold Regions
Test Center, a subordinate command of Yuma Proving Ground and the winter test
element of the Army Test and Evaluation Command, has the mission to plan,
conduct and report the results of winter, mountain and northern environment
phases of developmental testing.
The hybrid electric HMMWV is one of four hybrid electric HMMWVs delivered
to the U.S. Army for performance testing and evaluation at Aberdeen and Yuma
Proving Grounds. AM General, the manufacturer of the HMMWV, is the Prime
Contractor. IDT-PEI Electronics is responsible for the complete hybrid drive
system design and integration, electronics component design and the energy
management system for the vehicles. UQM Technologies provides the propulsion
motors, generators and power electronic inverters under subcontract to IDT-PEI
Electronics.
During earlier programs, two hybrid electric HMMWVs were developed for
proof of concept demonstration of hybrid electric technology. One prototype
was configured as a "tactical" model incorporating a UQM(R) 55kW generator and
four UQM(R) 75 kW propulsion motors, one per wheel, delivering acceleration
from zero to 50 M.P.H. in 8 seconds. The second was configured as a "utility"
model incorporating a UQM(R) 75 kW generator and two UQM(R) 75 kW propulsion
motors, one per axle. This vehicle successfully completed a cross-country
trip from Washington D.C. to San Francisco in 2000 to demonstrate vehicle
performance and test readiness.
William G. Rankin, UQM Technologies' President and Chief Executive
Officer, said, "The initiation of cold weather evaluation marks another
milestone in the potential application of hybrid electric propulsion to this
class of military vehicle. Successful cold weather and harsh terrain
operations is crucial to achieving the HMMWVs mission objectives and we are
confident that our hybrid electric propulsion systems will perform well in
this demanding round of evaluation testing."
The Company recently delivered electric propulsion motors, generators and
power electronic inverters for two additional hybrid electric HMMWVs capable
of submersible operations at a depth of 60 inches below water. By providing
submersible operating capability, fording operations are now available in
addition to the other benefits of hybrid electric propulsion including stealth
operation, reduced fuel consumption and the availability of significant
on-board electric power.

UQM Technologies, Inc. is a developer and manufacturer of power dense,
