No. 1 Selling Gasoline in America Launches New Formulation For Better Mileage and a Clean Engine

HOUSTON, June 30, 2003 - Shell Oil Products US and Motiva Enterprises LLC today introduced new gasolines that are specially formulated to improve fuel economy by reducing friction in the engine. According to tests Shell conducted using standard EPA procedures, the new gasolines can improve fuel economy over gasolines at minimum detergency requirements. The new Shell formulation, which is offered in all three grades - regular, plus and premium - can add up to 125 miles per year for a customer driving 12,500 miles per year. The launch builds on the Shell tradition of providing motorists with quality fuels and represents the second new gasoline in a series of fuel offerings that will provide motorists with increased value and enhanced quality. Additionally, the new Shell formulation further supports the two companies' commitment to build the Shell brand in the United States.

"While our existing offering gives motorists the benefit of a clean engine, our new gasolines have been specially formulated to improve fuel economy," said Russell Caplan, vice president of retail for Shell Oil Products US. "Shell has been providing American motorists with quality fuels and lubricants for nearly 100 years and our new gasoline builds on that with a formulation that can give better mileage, a clean engine and the peace of mind they expect from a quality brand."

Prior to developing the new fuel, Shell conducted extensive consumer research, which revealed that drivers value the time and money saved as a result of improved fuel economy. The new formulation reduces friction between moving parts inside an engine, such as pistons and rings, so they slide more easily inside cylinders. This helps the engine run more efficiently and use less fuel. In addition, the new Shell formulation has significantly more detergent than gasolines at minimum EPA detergency requirements to help protect against the build-up of harmful carbon deposits inside the engine. A clean engine not only performs better, but also produces fewer emissions.

"Shell and Motiva are dedicated to giving customers the best value for their money, so whichever grade they choose - regular, plus or premium unleaded - their engine will benefit from better mileage starting with the very first tank," continued Caplan. "From the Shell MasterCard from Citibank - which gives cardholders one of the best rebates available in the oil industry - to convenient locations, a consistent shopping experience and gasolines specially formulated to give better mileage, the Shell brand offers customers more value for their money."

In conjunction with today's introduction of the new fuel, Shell will kick-off a $25 million communications campaign that is centered around the message - "Get better mileage."
