President of AAA Minnesota/Iowa Judell Anderson: Prepare Your Car Now for Winter

BURNSVILLE, Minn., Sept. 30 -- The stress and strain on your vehicle increases greatly in cold weather conditions and minor deficiencies can often develop into major problems. So, now is the time to prepare your vehicle for winter. Your automobile should be checked prior to the end of fall and by doing so, you will increase your family's safety during the winter driving season. A do-it-yourself winter car care inspection can be performed using the following guidelines:

  -- Battery- Make sure the terminals are tight and clean. If your lights
     seem dim or your vehicle starts are sluggish, have the electrical
     system, including the battery, checked by a technician.
  -- Radiator- Check the coolant strength with a hydrometer. The recommended
     protection level is -36 degrees. Remember to never check a hot
     radiator.
  -- Belts/Hoses- Check the belts for cracks or fraying. Check the hoses for
     leaks, bulges or cracks. Make sure the clamps are secure.
  -- Windshield washer/wiper- Make sure the reservoir is filled with washer
     solvent. Replace your wiper blades if needed.
  -- Oil, Brake, Transmission, Radiator Coolant and Power Steering Fluid-
     Check the oil and fluid levels. Follow your owner's manual directions.
  -- Air Filter- Hold the air filter up to a light. If you cannot see
     through it, replace it.
  -- Tires- Inspect the wear on your tires. Check the pressure with a gauge
     when the tires are cold. Refer to your owner's manual for the
     recommended air pressure and tread depth specifications.
  -- Lights and Signals- Activate both to ensure they all work.
