Three Hybrid Electric HMMWVs Powered By UQM Propulsion Systems on Display

FREDERICK, Colo., Oct. 6, 2003 -- UQM TECHNOLOGIES, INC. (AMEX:UQM) , a developer of alternative energy technologies, announced today that three hybrid electric HMMWVs, (pronounced Humvee), are on display at the AUSA Exhibition in Washington D.C. today through October 8th. The vehicles on display include two hybrid electric high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles on display in the Integrated Defense Technologies, Inc. (IDT) booth and a hybrid electric HMMWV in the Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC) booth.

On display in the IDT booth is a tactical version of the hybrid electric HMMWV powered by four UQM(R) propulsion systems, one driving each wheel and a UQM(R) generator with a lithium ion battery pack for energy storage, and one utility version of the hybrid electric HMMWV powered by two UQM(R) propulsion systems, one driving each axle, and a UQM(R) generator, with lead acid batteries for energy storage. The tactical version of the HMMWV accelerates from zero to 50 mph in 8 seconds and has independent four wheel drive which improves traction and allows the vehicle to perform zero turning radius maneuvers by driving two wheels in a forward direction at the same time the other two wheels are rotated in the reverse direction. An additional utility version of the hybrid electric HMMWV is on display in the SMDC booth. The utility version of the HMMWV recently successfully completed fourteen months of extensive testing and evaluation at multiple sites including the Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground, Yuma Proving Grounds and the Cold Region Test Center near Delta Junction, Alaska. Two other vehicles were recently manufactured and delivered to the Army's Aviation Ground Support community and the Air Force Research Lab for evaluation. To date, these hybrid electric HMMWVs have accumulated over 6,000 miles of road course testing and more than 600 hours of off-board power generation testing.

"Our opportunities with the military continue to expand, not only in vehicle propulsion but also in a variety of other auxiliary power system applications. The demanding performance requirements of military vehicles and their auxiliary systems are ideally suited for our high performing, efficient and power dense motors and power electronic controls. With our recent advances in the constant power speed ratio of our propulsion systems to 10 to 1 and the performance and efficiency enhancements arising from our recently announced new method of motor control, we are well positioned to broaden our reach in all types of military combat systems and assist the U.S. Army in meeting the objectives of its Future Combat Systems Initiative," said William G. Rankin, President and Chief Executive Officer of UQM Technologies, Inc.
