Drag Racing Event Provides Legal Alternative for Hundreds of Valley Street Racers

TEMPE, Ariz., Nov. 18, 2003 -- More than 200 sport compact racers and over 1,000 friends and spectators gathered at Sport Compact Only Night at Firebird International Raceway in Chandler last weekend, DragRacing.com announced today. The event was the latest in a two-year-old series of automotive/lifestyle events. Organized by DragRacing.com, the Sport Compact Only Nights series is intended to give local sport compact and import performance enthusiasts a fun alternative to the dangerous street racing scene.

The event, which was sponsored by AutoTrader magazines, After 9 Entertainment, and over a dozen local businesses, featured a number of racing and non-racing activities, including popular "Beat the Heat" races against a modified Maricopa County Sheriff's Department patrol car, a model search, and hits spun throughout the night by several Valley DJs.

"We're very pleased with the turnout," said DragRacing.com CEO Roger Falcione. "Just last week brought news of the largest street racing bust in Phoenix history. This week many would-be street racers are instead getting their first taste of a real race on a professional race track, which is where they and their cars belong."
