3rd Annual GM ten Celebrates Southern California Car Culture

The celebration of today’s hottest cars, stars and fashion come together for a night of charity

HOLLYWOOD, CA. - The blending of hot cars, couture fashion and today's hottest celebrities is becoming a pre-Academy Awards tradition in Southern California and 2004 is no exception. General Motors' latest concept cars, cool customized current and vintage vehicles, and the hottest street rides around will be presented on a fashion runway in a specially constructed pavilion in Hollywood.

"The melding of fashion and automotive design is a natural fit for General Motors as our cars are the ultimate fashion accessory," said Mike Jackson, General Manager for GM's Western Region.

Various charities, as chosen by the celebrities that walk the runway, will benefit from this event. Some of those charities include: Narconon, a drug rehabilitation program; Ginnifer Goodwin will be donating her money to Cry Help, supporting the fight against AIDS, and more.

The third annual event will feature 22 vehicles, including:

FASHION RUNWAY VEHICLES:

Saturn Curve (concept)

Shape, color and sound affect the senses. With the Saturn Curve concept, a sinewy shape, warm colors and the aural delights of a supercharged engine warm the emotions of those who appreciate sophisticated and engaging automobiles. The design of the Curve abounds with interesting details that emphasize its contemporary design aesthetic, as well as its sports car roots, including roof pillars that are concealed by a wraparound canopy of glass - creating the look of a "floating" roof panel.

Sports car performance is derived from a supercharged 2.2-liter Ecotec four-cylinder engine that produces more than 200 horsepower and more than 200 lb.-ft. of torque. Unique seven-spoke, outboard-style 20-inch wheels are mounted to performance tires and fitted to the Curve's responsive chassis.

Buick Blackhawk (show car)

The Buick Blackhawk is not just any customized car - it's designed to emphasize Buick's heritage of distinctive design and outstanding power for the specialized audiences that attend custom/hot rod shows. It has classic styling combined with contemporary proportions. If you're talking about customized cars, the Blackhawk is the ultimate expression of Buick.

The Blackhawk is basically a 2-plus-2 convertible with a retractable top, and a body that looks like it came out of the late 1930's or '40s - because it did. Everything except the grille has been modified, and the final appearance - featuring black cherry paint, doors without handles and hidden headlamps - is of a streamlined yet retro head-turner.

Saturn VUE Street Play (show car)

More power, a lowered body, stiffened suspension, and a number of exterior and interior changes highlight the VUE Street Play. The Street Play adds an additional 50 horses to the VUE Red Line model with a Comptech-installed Eaton supercharger, bringing it to 300 horsepower. Ground Control front and rear suspension systems with Koni shocks and an OBX strut tower brace provide outstanding handling and lower the Street Play's ride height by 4 inches from the regular VUE.

Street Play rides on 20-inch TOYO Proxes P255/45ZR performance tires and two-piece HRE polished aluminum wheels. Stopping power comes from Stainless Steel Brake Corp's front and rear performance disc brakes, sporting a 12.8-in. diameter rear rotor with single piston aluminum caliper. Inside, both driver and front passenger are held in place by four Recaro racing seats with Sparco four-point lap belts and a full-length (front-to-rear) console with two Apple iPods.

Saab 9-3 Aero Convertible (customized)

All new for 2004, the 9-3 Convertible is the biggest advance Saab has made in nearly 20 years of designing four-seater, four-season soft tops. The 9-3 Convertible is offered in two trim levels: 9-3 Arc and 9-3 Aero, both powered by a 210-hp 4-cylinder turbo engine. The "one-touch" soft-top operation requires no manual involvement beyond pressing a button. The roof is hydraulically-powered, with automatic self-latching to the header rail, and raises or lowers in just 20 seconds.

Specific custom features on this 9-3 Aero Convertible are: Metallic Mandarin Orange paint, painted body moldings and door handles, painted interior "surround trim" including tonneau, orange suede inserts in the seats, orange suede door trim, Saab 17-inch, two-piece chrome wheels, sport exhaust system, wood steering wheel and brushed aluminum interior trim, and a beige convertible top.

Chevrolet Bel Air (concept)

The Chevrolet Bel Air concept is a modern American convertible built on the tradition of the legendary 1955-57 Chevys of the same name. The two-door Bel Air concept celebrates an American icon in a manner reminiscent of the originals with style, performance and a powerful engine. The Bel Air is about embracing the essence of those mid-50s Chevys in a contemporary way. This car is the right size for America, just like the originals were in the 1950s. The rear-wheel-drive concept also was inspired by several interior design cues from its 1950s predecessor. The simple, elegant passenger compartment features a twin-element instrument panel, steering column-mounted gearshift and bench seats. The seats are covered in soft high-technology fabrics, in colors that match the exterior. The front seats are cleverly designed to slide forward for easier backseat entry.

The Bel Air is powered by a Vortec 3500 turbocharged inline five-cylinder engine based on the highly regarded inline engine family that debuted in GM's midsize sport-utility vehicles. The all-aluminum engine delivers up to 315 horsepower and 315 lb.-ft. of torque, and is mated to a Hydra-Matic 4L60-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. The Bel Air concept taps the interest in nostalgia that people of all ages share while creating a fun, uniquely American automobile for a whole new generation of drivers.

Hummer H3T (concept)

No matter the size or configuration, a vehicle adorned with the HUMMER name must deliver the best-in-class capabilities that have made the brand the standard against which other off-road vehicles are measured. That's certainly the case with the dynamic H3T, a midsize truck that infuses all of HUMMER's military-derived DNA into an efficient, refined package and carves a new niche in the midsize truck market. Innovative features abound in the H3T: The pickup box incorporates side-access doors, along with drop-down assist steps that also double as weather-tight storage

compartments. The H3T's unique tailgate forms an unbroken load surface when down, contributing to the H3T's versatility.

The H3T's purposefully premium interior environment includes a rugged shifter handle that folds completely forward and military-inspired toggle switches for various controls. An altimeter, compass and inclinometer also are mounted on the dashboard. The H3T's exterior features high-tech, yet durable LED headlamps and taillamps, an integrated winch and tow hooks, as well as front and rear skid plates that are stamped out of aluminum and joined with side "rock sliders." A 350-horsepower, turbocharged version of GM's new Vortec 3500 inline five-cylinder engine powers the H3T, and it's backed by the heavy-duty Hydra-Matic 4L65-E electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. The turbocharged five-cylinder produces more power than most six-cylinder engines, but is more compact. The engine also makes 350 lb.-ft. of torque, which helps the H3T tackle steep terrain with ease.

With the Korean War in the rearview mirror, Americans had a lot to look forward to in 1954. When it came to buying a car, Chevrolet reigned supreme as America's Number One automotive builder turning out cool models like the Bel Air, which could be bought as a sedan, wagon, coupe or convertible. The popular convertible could be purchased for $2,185 in 1954.

2006 Pontiac Solstice

Bringing the popular concept car to life, GM announced production of the Pontiac Solstice promising thrilling, open-air driving freedom expected in dealer showrooms in fall 2005. Solstice's power is created by a new 2.4-liter variable-valve version of the Ecotec DOHC four-cylinder engine, producing about 170 horsepower. Its twin-cam, multi-valve design provides stirring, high-revving performance, while the engine's lightweight, all-aluminum construction helps optimize the vehicle's front-to-rear balance. At the start of production, Solstice will be offered with a close-ratio Aisin five-speed manual transmission.

Interior design is purposeful and clever, with details like pedals placed for easy heel-and-toe driving and a cockpit-style instrument panel that sweeps around the driver. Designers also worked with chassis engineers to optimize the placement of the shifter.

It is difficult to imagine a time when concept cars did not exist. These mainstays of the show circuit have become as commonplace as electricity and indoor plumbing. But in 1938, the idea of creating an expressive automobile to explore new worlds of design and technology may have seemed as fanciful as space flight. General Motors was the first manufacturer to take this step - and the result was the Buick Y-Job, a car that is widely acknowledged as the industry's first concept car.

As GM's first concept car, this two-seat sports convertible introduced concealed headlamps, flush door handles, a power-operated convertible top concealed by a metal cover, electrically operated windows, push-button door handles, 13-inch diameter wheels with finned brake drums.
