ATA and AAA Oregon Demonstrate Safety Measures for Portland Drivers

Mack Truck's Program Visits Portland to Save Lives on Oregon Highways

       Thousands of Vehicles Travel I-5 Through Portland Each Day;
Most Automobile Drivers Were Never Taught What They Can Do
to Avoid Initiating an Accident with a Tractor-Trailer

Who: Professional truck drivers, the American Trucking
Associations (ATA), AAA Oregon, the Oregon State Police, and
               the Oregon Trucking Association.

What: A demonstration of highway safety measures will be conducted
for local news media, including "ride-alongs" in tractor-
trailers, as part of the national Share the Road tour
               visiting Portland, OR.

When: Thursday, March 11th, 10:00 AM

Where: Roadway Express, Inc., 6845 N. Cutter Circle,
               Portland, OR, 97217
               (see driving directions below.)

Summary: Professional truck drivers with millions of miles of
accident-free driving, ATA and AAA Oregon, will demonstrate
safety measures critical to saving lives on Portland's
highways. The demonstration will include truck ride-alongs
for news reporters and photographers. Safety demonstration
will include tips on blind spots, safe-merging techniques,
               and stopping and following distances.

The safety advice is critical for Portland area drivers
               because:

               * 35% of all truck-involved highway fatalities occur in a
truck's blind spots (Federal Motor Carrier Safety
                  Administration)
               * Most drivers were never taught how to share the road
                  safely with trucks
               * Watching this demonstration will help reduce accidents
