2004 National XMODS Racing League (XRL) Finals

Carl O'Keefe Crowned as New York City's XRL Champion

FORT WORTH, Texas, Aug. 9 -- The 2004 XMODS Racing League (XRL) National Tournament, a national radio control (RC) tournament sponsored by RadioShack Corporation , raced into New York City just long enough for Carl O'Keefe to prove his mettle on the racetrack against hundreds of RC racing enthusiasts. Carl O'Keefe of Blakeslee, Penn., will be flown to the 2004 XRL National Finals in Atlanta, Ga., in September to battle it out against the nation's best XMODS Custom RC racers for the title of America's XMODS Racing League champion and the ultimate grand prize, a super-modified Acura NSX valued at more than $120,000.

"I came to New York this weekend to compete, have some fun, and win a chance to race in the championships," said Carl O'Keefe, a 29-year-old computer technician. "I was able to do all those things. I can't wait to go up against the other regional winners in Atlanta."

The XRL Tournament pit stop in New York attracted more than 1,000 people during the weekend further proving the growing popularity of XMODS. New York's XRL Regional Tournament featured 44 racers competing in three heats. The top 16 competitors on the XMODS leader board advanced on to the Regional Finals where Carl O'Keefe led the way to first place with an unbeatable track time of 17 laps in 2:56 during the final heat to earn a trip to the finals in Atlanta.

"We had an outstanding turnout in New York for the multi-city national XRL Tournament, including some of the best RC fans and top racers I've seen yet," said Don Carroll, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, RadioShack Corporation. "We are definitely ready for the national finals in Atlanta and the chance to crown the 2004 XRL National champion and give away the 2004 Acura NSX."

The 2004 XRL National Finals in September will crown the nation's first- ever XMODS Racing League champion. The grand prize winner will receive a super-modified 2004 Acura NSX that has been engineered for the racetrack but tuned for street domination with a slew of after-market upgrades and accessories. As primary sponsor of the XRL tournament and creator of XMODS(TM) Custom RC cars, RadioShack has created a Web site (http://www.xmodsrc.com/ ) to better support the growing tide of RC enthusiasts who want to start their own XMODS racing leagues. The site allows users to follow regional and national competitions, compare track scores and ultimately build an XMODS movement across the U.S.

New York City was the seventh pit stop on the 2004 XRL National Tournament, which is part of RadioShack's larger XMODS Stop. Drop. Race! Tour, a program designed to boost the level of excitement surrounding tournament competitions among RC car fans. The XMODS Stop. Drop. Race! Tour began in March, visiting 20 markets across the country and causing a stir at popular destinations. The 2004 XRL National Tournament kicked-off this June and is visiting 10 markets before culminating this September in the 2004 XRL National Finals in Atlanta.
