Delphi Showcases Next Generation of Safety and Communications at Convergence 2004

Delphi to present five papers, lead several sessions at symposium

DETROIT, Oct. 7 -- Delphi Corp. will showcase its innovative safety and communications technologies at the International Congress on Transportation Electronics, Convergence 2004, Oct. 18-20, at Cobo Hall.

  Delphi's exhibit will be located in Oakland Hall (number 501).

The Delphi theme for the symposium is "Delphi: The Next Generation of Vehicle Safety and Communications." Highlights of Delphi's presence at the show includes the following:

TECHNICAL PRESENTATIONS

Delphi technology experts will discuss electronics trends in the vehicle industry at the show. Delphi engineers, researchers and technology experts have authored or co-authored five different technical papers that will be published and presented during the symposium. In addition, several Delphi executives will chair or co-chair a number of the sessions and Linos Jacovides, Delphi director of Research Labs, is serving as the vice chairman for the Technical Programs.

Session # 1, "Mobile Digital Entertainment: A Revolution in the Media Industry," (Monday, Oct. 18, 2-5 p.m., Room 02-33):

Dr. Robert Schumacher, general director of the Wireless Business Line at Delphi Electronics & Safety (E&S) will chair the session. Douglas Welk, advanced engineering supervisor, will present a paper titled, "Evolution of the Car Radio: From Vacuum Tubes to Satellite and Beyond" during this session. The paper is co-authored by Dr. Richard Lind, director of advanced engineering at Delphi E&S and Dr. Huan Yen, advanced engineering manager at Delphi E&S.

Session #2 "Automotive On/Off Board Diagnosis,"(Monday, October 18, 2-5 p.m., Room 03-45):

Gary Abusamra, chief engineer for Engine Management, at Delphi Energy & Chassis (E&C) division will present his paper titled "Diagnosis Concept for Future Vehicle Electronics Systems." The paper was co-authored by Rob Carpenter, engineering group manager, at Delphi E&S.

Session #6 "Impact of Consumer Electronics on Automotive Electronics," (Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2-5 p.m., Room W2-60):

Thomas Puza, director of engineering for the Wireless Business Line, Delphi E&S will present his paper titled "Entertainment: The Dominant Application for Consumer Electronics in Vehicles." The paper is co-authored by Jeff Jones, chief engineer for the Wireless Business Line at Delphi E&S and Dr. Yen. Dr. Schumacher is serving as vice chair of the session.

Session #8, "X-by-Wire,"(Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2-5 p.m., Room 03-45):

Dr. Jean Botti, chief technologist Delphi Dynamics and Propulsion, will serve as vice-chair for the session.

Session #12, "Balancing Mobility Features with Cost & Quality," (Wednesday, Oct. 20, 9-11 a.m., Room W2-60):

Gary Streelman, regional technical manager at Delphi E&S will serve as vice-chair for the session.

Session #15 "Rate of Change in Electronics vs. Other Industries," (Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2:30-5 p.m., Room 02-33):

Frank Winters, manager of integrated circuits design at Delphi E&S, will present a paper titled "Design Process Changes Enabling Rapid Development."

FEATURED TECHNOLOGIES

Delphi will have three technology demonstration vehicles at its exhibit. Delphi will also demonstrate some of its leading products and technologies, including: 802.11 wireless networking; active safety systems; its latest retail satellite radio systems and retail rear seat entertainment systems. In addition, Delphi will show its over molded electronic packaging; low-cost dazzling displays with LED illumination; accelerated calibration for electronic compass; oil quality sensors; tire pressure monitoring system integration; battery disconnect device; air and humidity sensors; mechatronics system device connections and connection system device connectors.

The Convergence 2004 theme is "Vehicle Electronics to Digital Mobility: The Next Generation of Convergence." The conference will focus on digital mobility and using sophisticated, digital, fast, closed loop controlled signals to replace slower analog open loop processing.
