Arctic Cat's Low-Emission, Quiet 4-Stroke Snowmobile Receives Certification to Operate in Yellowstone National Park

Arctic Cat Inc. today announced that its 2005 model T660 Touring 4-stroke snowmobile has been certified as meeting the National Park Service's Best Available Technology (BAT) standards, enabling it to be operated in Yellowstone National Park. Arctic Cat was presented with the BAT certification by U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Gale Norton at the company's headquarters today.

BAT certification is required to meet the stringent noise and pollution restrictions that are being phased in at Yellowstone National Park this winter. Approved snowmobiles must reduce hydrocarbon emissions by at least 90 percent, lower carbon monoxide emissions by 70 percent and significantly reduce engine noise compared to 2-stroke snowmobile engines. Additionally, snowmobilers in Yellowstone must be accompanied by a guide, stay on plowed roads and obey strict speed limits.

"We're proud of our technology leadership and this recognition again from the Department of the Interior," said Christopher A. Twomey, Arctic Cat's chairman and CEO. "Not only was Arctic Cat the first manufacturer to develop a cleaner and quieter 4-stroke snowmobile, we were the first to receive certification to run snowmobiles in Yellowstone National Park. Today, our 4-stroke engine already exceeds the EPA's 2012 emissions standards."

Secretary Norton, accompanied by U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman and U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson, toured Arctic Cat's manufacturing and engineering facility in Thief River Falls, Minn., before issuing the certification. The tour provided a demonstration of the company's new, quiet and low-emission 2005 model T660 4-stroke snowmobile, as well as Arctic Cat's state-of-the-art emissions and noise testing chambers.

The following Arctic Cat snowmobiles have previously been BAT certified and approved for use in Yellowstone National Park: 2004 T660 Touring; 2003 4-Stroke Trail and Touring; and the 2002 4-Stroke Trail and Touring models.
