Toyota Achieves Record October 2004 Sales
TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 3, 2004 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported record October sales of 170,815, an increase of 13.0 percent over last October. Calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) sales total 1,717,844, an increase of 9.3 percent compared to the same period last year.
"The effects of pre-election consumer uncertainty and higher gas prices didn't hurt sales as much as anticipated," said Jim Press, TMS executive vice president and COO. "Once the election dust settles, the fourth quarter will be stronger than expected."
The Toyota Division recorded best-ever October sales of 147,106, an increase of 14.3 percent over the year-ago month. The Lexus Division posted best-ever October sales of 23,709, an increase of 5.5 percent over last October.
Toyota Division passenger cars registered best-ever October sales of 83,942, up 24.5 percent from October of last year. Sales were led by America's best-selling passenger car, Camry, with an October best-ever 35,887 units sold, an increase of 7.2 percent. Corolla registered its best-ever October with 27,855 units sold, an increase of 23.2 percent. The Prius gas- electric hybrid mid-size sedan posted its best-ever overall sales month of 6,123, up 49.9 percent from last October. The former Prius sales record, set in November 2003, was surpassed by 9.6 percent.
Scion reported best-ever October sales with 10,550 units sold, an increase of 726.8 percent. The all-new tC sports coupe registered strong October sales of 4,011 units in its fourth month of sales. The xB urban utility vehicle and xA subcompact both posted best-ever October sales. The xB recorded sales of 4,262 units, an increase of 456.4 percent, and the xA posted sales of 2,277 units, an increase of 346.5 percent.
Toyota Division light trucks enjoyed strong October sales of 63,164, an increase of 3.1 percent from October of last year. Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) posted best-ever October sales of 10,708 units, an increase of 27.5 percent. Sales of the Tundra full-size pickup were also up with 9,448 units sold, an increase of 37.8 percent, while the Land Cruiser full-size SUV posted sales of 655, up 8.3 percent.
Lexus Division
The Lexus Division continues to be America's luxury brand sales leader with CYTD sales of 232,588 units, up 11.1 percent. Lexus passenger car sales were led by the ES 330 entry luxury sedan, which enjoyed best-ever October sales of 5,997 units, an increase of 3.2 percent. The flagship LS 430 luxury sedan recorded 2,805 sales for the month, an increase of 2.0 percent.
Lexus light trucks recorded best-ever October sales of 12,811, an increase of 15.8 percent. The RX 330 luxury SUV achieved best-ever October sales with 8,437 units, up 15.1 percent over the same period last year. The GX 470 luxury mid-size SUV continued to post strong sales with a best-ever October of 3,354 units sold, an increase of 24.9 percent.
Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 56.5 percent of total October sales.
