LA Auto Club: Monthly Average Gas Price Drops 20.3 Cents

LOS ANGELES--Jan. 18, 2005--Southern California's average price for regular gasoline has dropped more than 20 cents during the past month and 38 cents from the November peak, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California monthly Fuel Gauge Report.

Although prices continue downward, they are still 25 cents higher than in January 2004.

The Southern California January average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline is $1.989, which compares to a Dec. 14, 2004 average of $2.192 and a year-ago average of $1.737. Statewide, the average price for January is $1.940, down from $2.161 in December.

"Slower demand and smooth-running California refineries have contributed to lower gas prices this past month," said Auto Club spokeswoman Carol Thorp. "However, prices remain higher than last year because crude oil costs have averaged about $10 per barrel more than last January. Many refineries are about to begin regularly scheduled maintenance to produce summer-grade gasoline, and the reduced production may slow or reverse the recent declines."

The lowest average price in Southern California is in Escondido, where regular is selling for $1.890. Blythe reported the state's highest average price at $2.273. Marysville in Northern California had the lowest price in the state at $1.790. Nationally, the average price is $1.812, down from $1.84 in December.
