Visteon Honors Detroit Scholar

VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich., April 26 -- Jennifer C. Salis, a senior at Detroit's Davis Aerospace Technical High School, was named Visteon Corporation's first Visteon Scholar at the National Association of Black Automotive Suppliers' (NABAS) 17th Annual Scholarship Awards Banquet on April 25 at Cobo Center in Detroit.

Paul Radkoski, Visteon's vice president, North American materials management, presented the $20,000 scholarship to Salis.

"We are pleased to contribute to this year's NABAS Scholarship Fund and to announce the first recipient of the Visteon Scholar Award," said Radkoski. "Jennifer reflects the next generation of automotive leaders; she is focused, creative and dedicated to pursuing excellence."

"I'm very excited about the scholarship," said Salis. "I've always enjoyed cars and I think the automotive field would be a great area for me to go into."

Salis was selected for the award based on her academic achievements, community involvement and high school leadership record. She is a National Honor Society member, has served as class president at Davis Aerospace Technical for three years and will represent her graduating class as valedictorian. Salis graduates in June and plans to pursue a degree in business and marketing at Detroit's Wayne State University.

"An investment in the education of our African-American youth is an investment in the future of the automotive industry," said Henry S. Martin Jr., associate director, supplier diversity development for Visteon. "Visteon is pleased to support the NABAS Scholarship Fund in its mission to help launch the automotive careers of our youth."

The NABAS Scholarship Awards Banquet raises funds to help young scholars and their families afford the expense of a college education. All proceeds provide financial support for scholarships and mentoring for outstanding African-American students who will pursue careers in the automotive industry. This year, eight students received scholarships and more than $200,000 was raised for the fund nationally.

NABAS, formed in 1986, serves as a vital communication link between black- owned automotive suppliers and automotive manufacturers. The organization facilitates a scholarship fund, provides seminars and supports networking opportunities for its members. NABAS has offices in Detroit and Montgomery, Ala.
