Highway Safety Leaders Demo Measures for Safe Summer Travel

National Share the Road Safety Tour Visits Lansing to Save Lives
                           on Michigan Highways

On a typical day as many as 67,000 vehicles travel I-496 through Lansing.

Most automobile drivers are not aware of what they can do to avoid accidents

                          with tractor-trailers.

Who: The American Trucking Associations (ATA), the Michigan State
Police, AAA Michigan, and the Michigan Trucking Association.

What: A demonstration of highway safety measures for saving lives
during summer travel will be conducted for local news media,
including "ride-alongs" in tractor-trailers, as part of the
national Share the Road safety tour visiting Lansing, MI.

  When: Thursday, July 14, 2005, 10:00 AM

Where: Roadway Express, 3333 W. St. Joseph St., Lansing, MI (see
               driving directions below.)

Summary: Professional truck drivers with millions of miles of
accident-free driving, the Michigan State Police, ATA, AAA
Michigan, and others, will demonstrate safety measures
critical to saving lives on Michigan highways. A static
demonstration with simulated highway lanes will show how cars
and trucks get into accidents. A professional truck driver
will provide truck ride-alongs for news reporters and
photographers, providing tips on summer driving, blind spots,
driving in construction zones, driver distraction, and
               stopping and following distances.

This safety advice is critical for Lansing drivers because:
               * Roughly three quarters of all truck-involved fatalities are
inadvertently initiated by car drivers (Federal Motor
                 Carrier Safety Administration).
               * 35% of all truck-involved highway fatalities occur in a
truck's blind spots (Federal Motor Carrier Safety
                 Administration).
               * Watching this demonstration will help reduce accidents and
                 save lives.

Directions: Take I-496 west to the Waverly Rd. Exit. Go right on Waverly
to the 1st stop light. At stop light go right on St. Joseph
St. 1/4 mile to Roadway on the right.
