U. S. Government Plans Momentous Change in Fuel Rules

For the first time in 30 years, changes will be made to fuel economy standards on light trucks. The Detroit News reports that the Bush administration will unveil the landmark changes this week that will cover pickups, SUVs, and minivans. This is the first major overhaul since 1975 when Congress mandated standards for all vehicles after an Arab oil embargo sent gasoline prices soaring. With gas prices reaching all-time highs, the regulations are expected to renew a debate over the best way to achieve more miles per gallon without harming automakers or reducing passenger safety. Currently, Automakers are required to maintain an average of 27.5 mpg for cars and 21.0 mpg for light trucks.
