2006 North American International Auto Show to Host Second Annual Automotive Education Day

Event will bring students and top industry specialists together

DETROIT, Dec. 6 -- The 2006 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) will host the second annual Automotive Education Day presented by State Farm Insurance at Cobo Center on Wed., Jan. 18 from 7:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Thousands of students from various school groups throughout southeast Mich. and Windsor, Ontario are expected to participate. Students in grades 8 - 12 will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn about the exciting aspects of the automotive industry through informative presentations by industry's top specialists and executives. Students also will have the time to visit the new Automotive Post-Secondary Career Fair, tour the NAIAS show floor, have lunch in the Cobo Center Arena, and participate with a Post- Automotive Education Day Challenge.

"As always, we are excited to educate even more young people about the diverse career paths available in the automotive industry," said Richard Genthe, NAIAS 2006, Senior Co-Chairman. "Automotive Education Day will give a clear depiction of the creative and technical skill levels needed for careers in automotive design, engineering, and alternative fuel/technology."

Last year, more than 4,000 students from Mich., Ind., Ohio and Canada attended the first ever Automotive Education Day at Cobo Center. Students experienced presentations about safe driving, marketing, environmental impact, and graphic and automotive design from representatives with top automotive companies. The participating companies included DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, BMW, Subaru, Toyota and Michelin, to name a few.

This year's Automotive Education Day will feature an Automotive Post- Secondary Career Fair. The fair will enable students to talk one-on-one with post-secondary school representatives about their career interests and opportunities. In addition, a resource guide will be provided to each instructor attending the event to encourage ongoing classroom instruction and discussion regarding the automotive industry.

Automotive Education Day will also include a new Post-Education Day Challenge to further encourage students to take what they learned at the NAIAS back to the classroom. The activity will encourage students to apply knowledge learned at the show in an effort to win prizes for their respective schools. School groups will receive this information at the Automotive Education Day.

"At State Farm we are committed to helping young people realize career opportunities that exist in a variety of industries, from insurance to automotive repair," says State Farm Senior Vice President Mary Crego. "We have teams of employees collaborating every day with auto manufacturers and safety organizations on vehicle research, safety and design."

Tickets for Automotive Education Day are $10 USD per student and include lunch. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. in Cobo Arena, followed by opening remarks.

School groups interested in participating with the Automotive Education Day are encouraged to contact their school career counseling center or visit http://www.naias.com/aed2006 for more information.
