Tire Registration is the Law!

AKRON, Ohio--May 4, 2006--If the tires you are riding on this summer were involved in a recall, would you be directly notified of this potential life-threatening hazard? Are you aware that dealers are required by law to provide you with a registration form at purchase time so you will be directly notified about a recall?

When the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or a tire manufacturer orders a recall, it is done to remove potentially unsafe tires from the highway as quickly as possible. This tire registration regulation was mandated by federal law with consumer safety in mind, and is the only realistic way to accomplish this objective.

According to CIMS, the leader in helping companies keep track of registered tires, only a small percentage of consumers are aware of the right to have their tires registered. Those who are unaware of tire registration are missing out on this critical, life-threatening safety protection.

"Tire registration is the law, and it is a very important safety issue for the tire purchaser," said Paul Kruder, president of CIMS, a privately owned, independent company. "The consumers' potentially unsafe tires must be removed from the highways as quickly as possible. That's the objective of tire registration.

"When you buy tires, the seller is required to provide you with a pre-addressed form. Tire registration is the law, and it is your right to receive this form," said Kruder. "If you don't get a form, ask for one. Tire registration is the only way to ensure that the manufacturer can alert you in a timely manner.

"The seller has to include information such as the brand of tire, and tire identification number (TIN), and their dealer name and address. All the tire purchaser has to do is fill out their name and address, apply postage, and mail the form to the tire registration center," said Kruder. "Many dealers will mail the form for you as an added customer service. There should be no charge to register your tires."
