Second Annual Back-Up to School Safely Program Gives Local Drivers the Knowledge and Technology to Keep Southern California Children Safe

Al & Ed's Autosound Teams Up With Cadbury Schweppes and Ralphs Grocery Company to Raise Awareness of Backover Safety With Community Events and the Chance to Win One of 50 Prize Packages

VAN NUYS, Calif., Aug. 24 -- Following the success of last year's "Back-Up To School Safely" program Al & Ed's Autosound is again teaming up with Cadbury Schweppes and Ralphs Grocery Company to raise awareness of backover safety. The campaign, which has been expanded from Los Angeles to include all of Southern California, will feature live demonstrations of "rear view" technology, safety tips on backover safety and the return of the "Swipe-stakes" where Ralphs customers will be entered to win one of 50 Al & Ed's Autosound gift cards worth $500. The gift card can be used to purchase an Al & Ed's Backover Safety System and Ralphs customers are automatically entered when using their Ralphs Club Card to purchase a Cadbury Schweppes 7UP, Motts or Hawaiian Punch product.

Backover accidents injure or kill over 2,500 children each year with over 60% of these incidents involving an immediate family member, according to the national non-profit organization Kids and Cars. Moreover, 55 children have been killed so far this year due to these types of preventable accidents, and the figure is undoubtedly much higher, as there is no law requiring federal or state agencies to collect information on injuries and deaths that occur as non-traffic incidents on private property.

"The California Highway Patrol keeps a record of fatalities when unsafe backing was the primary collision factor, and the seven deaths which were documented in 2005 could have been prevented," said Officer Humberto Jimenez of the Southern Division Public Affairs Unit of the CHP.

From August 23 through September 26, 2006, customers using their Ralphs Club Card while purchasing selected 7UP, Motts and Hawaiian Punch products will be automatically entered into the Back-Up To School Safely "Swipe- stakes," where 50 randomly selected winners will receive an Al & Ed's Autosound gift card worth $500. In addition, customers can redeem 10% off their next purchase at all Southern California Al & Ed's Autosound locations by showing their Ralphs Club Card.

"With the additional cars on the road and backing out of driveways during back to school time, there couldn't be a better time to partner with Cadbury Schweppes and Ralphs for a safety promotion," said Gabi Mashal, President of Al & Ed's Autosound. "A common misconception is that drivers have a complete view when they use the mirrors and look over their shoulder. I encourage LA drivers to come to a safety clinic and see for themselves how big most blindspots actually are."
