Edmunds.com Forecasts September Auto Sales: Mid-Size SUV Sales on the Rise

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--This month's new vehicle sales (including fleet sales) are expected to be 1.38 million units, a 4.1 percent increase from September 2005, according to Edmunds.com, the premier online resource for automotive information.

This September had 26 selling days, one more than last September. When adjusted for this difference, sales are virtually flat from September 2005. (The chart below sets forth other unadjusted and adjusted comparisons.)

Generous incentives and the recent decline in gas prices have helped to improve consumer demand for some larger vehicles," said Jesse Toprak, Executive Director, Industry Analysis for Edmunds.com. "We estimate that this months mid-size SUV sales are up 15 percent over last year and that large truck sales are up six percent. The large SUV segment has not recovered, though. We predict that segments sales are down nine percent compared with last year.

The combined monthly U.S. market share for Chrysler, Ford and General Motors (GM) domestic nameplates is estimated to be 54.5 percent in September, down from 56.1 percent in September 2005 and up from 53.5 percent from August 2006.

Edmunds.com predicts Chrysler will sell 158,000 units in September, down 12 percent compared to August 2006. This would result in a new car market share of 11.4 percent for Chrysler in September 2006, down from 13.3 percent in September 2005 and down from 12.1 percent in August 2006.

Edmunds.com predicts Ford will sell 234,000 units in September, down 6.3 percent compared to August 2006. This would result in a market share of 16.9 percent of new car sales in September for Ford, up from 16.8 percent in September 2005 and August 2006.

Edmunds.com predicts GM will sell 360,000 units in September, down 1.2 percent compared to August 2006. GM's market share is expected to be 26.1 percent of new vehicle sales in September 2006, unchanged from September 2005 and up from 24.6 percent in August 2006.

Edmunds.com predicts Honda will sell 132,000 units in September, down 12.8 percent from August 2006. Its market share is expected to be 9.6 percent in September, up from 9.2 percent in September 2005 and down from 10.2 percent in August 2006.

Edmunds.com predicts Nissan will sell 87,000 units in September, down about 3.2 percent from August 2006. Nissan's market share is expected to be 6.3 percent, down from 7.1 percent in September 2005 and up from 6.1 percent in August 2006.

Edmunds.com predicts Toyota will sell 214,000 units in September, down about 10.9 percent from August 2006. Toyota's market share is expected to be 15.5 percent in September, up from 13.5 percent in September 2005 and down from 16.2 percent from August 2006.
