Investigations have shown that driver assistance systems can have a preventative influence on more than 50% of all accidents. Despite this, a survey of drivers in Central London found that of those asked, 56% could not name any active safety systems in a modern car.
An auto executive told that "The industry needs to educates drivers…There is already a lot of lobbying being done to educate the public and discussion on ways to actively motivate people to go and buy driver assistance features because they have a certain benefit for them. But in September 2006, one of the major German insurance companies began offering some credit for truck owners if they were buying a truck with certain driver assistance features. So I think that type of incentive has to be offered to everybody."
The continuous development of driver assistance is accompanied by the European Union's eSafety action programme for road safety, which aims to halve the number of road fatalities by 2010. Driver assistance systems on the detection and analysis of the vehicle's surroundings will make a major contribution to the achievement of this aim.
Research has shown that driver error is one of the most common causes of traffic accidents. Driver assistance technologies provide a helping hand in times of trouble. Electronic driver assistance systems are increasingly being incorporated in cars across the board, from luxury vehicles to small city cars. Many of these systems are being fitted as standard equipment. The impact of these technologies is helping to avoid accidents and take the stress and strain out of driving.
In this new edition, the key market drivers for driver assistance systems are reviewed, and the market analysis is updated. Following the market overview in chapter 1, our product fitment forecasts in chapter 2 predict in some detail how the driver assistance market will evolve mainly in Europe and Japan from 2003 through to 2013. Chapter 3 provides an updated review of new product developments.
Chapter 1 - Introduction.
Chapter 2 - The market. With the EU aiming to halve road fatalities by 2010, driver assistance features are becoming more commonplace in vehicles. This chapter provides top-level market fitment, volume and value forecasts through 2013. Our forecasts are largely based on interviews with the author's extensive international network of industry contacts, such as Hella, Denso and Bosch; allowing us to consider and explain the implications and meanings of industry events. We also look at each of the major players in terms of main product lines and market shares.
Chapter 3 - Technical review. Vibrating warning devices, clearly separated warning lights and "earcons" - directed audible warnings, will all be common features in cars within a few years. This chapter outlines the latest innovations, and who is developing them. We consider adaptive cruise control, lane change assistance, parking assistance systems, collision warnings and night vision systems. Vehicles equipped with these driver assistance system features could detect potential accident situations, provide warnings or automatically engage a vehicle's brakes to maintain a pre-set distance between vehicles.
