2007 Frankfurt Motor Show - TRW Unveils Affordable Mid-Range Radar Technology Targeted at a Full Spectrum of Vehicles

FRANKFURT, Germany, Sept. 12 -- TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. , the global leader in active and passive safety systems, today unveiled details of its advanced 24ghz mid-range radar technology aimed at bringing the exciting advantages of radar-based systems to the mass vehicle markets.

Current radar-based systems such as TRW's Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) are referred to as "Driver Assist Systems". TRW ACC supports the driver and can assist with tasks such as braking and accelerating to maintain a consistent distance between a host and target vehicle. While the systems currently contribute to convenience and comfort, these systems are beginning to be used in conjunction with other automotive technologies to offer potential safety advantages such as object detection and collision mitigation.

"Today's radar-based systems tend to be high-end solutions capable of long target ranges up to 200 meters or more," said Josef Pickenhahn, vice president of Brake Engineering for TRW Automotive. "This range is primarily important for vehicles traveling at very high speeds to allow for an adequate safety gap at these relative velocities. But for the range of most normal operating conditions below 140 kilometers per hour, a radar system with a range of 120 meters should be more than adequate to support the driver while still maintaining all-weather capability."

TRW is currently developing its third generation of ACC radar and manufactures its own radar units. The expertise gained over the first two product generations, the reduced range and the larger potential vehicle market should lead to significant cost savings for the new mid-range radar system.

"Working with our colleagues at Volkswagen, TRW helped take the first step by offering an ACC radar system on the current VW Passat, and looks to bring radar products to a wider market with the mid-range radar. There are many important capabilities added to a vehicle with radar onboard, and TRW wants to make this technology more readily available to the buying public."
