From Malibu's aggressive TV campaign
helped Toyota become a viable contender in trying to become the top car seller in the U.S. In order to maintain its number one position, GM says it can't ignore Toyota's stronghold in the mid-size market – one of the largest segments in the automobile business. Hence, GM has launched a large-scale marketing campaign toting its redesigned Chevrolet Malibu.

According to GM, to succeed in the mid-size market, there is a formula one must follow – create a vehicle that looks expensive but has a substantially reduced price tag. Automotive journalists say another factor is marketing. GM officials say they know the Malibu will not dominate the mid-size auto industry, however, they do hope to garner positive attention.
