Consumers earn gas savings when grocery shopping

QUINCY, MA - July 2, 2008: To help combat the skyrocketing cost of gasoline this summer, Stop & Shop announced today a new program that enables New Englanders to save at the pump when they do their weekly grocery shopping. Consumers will earn per-gallon rewards when purchasing groceries at Stop & Shop. The gas rewards will be automatically tracked and applied at the pump via consumers' Stop & Shop cards, making it easy for consumers to save.

"In this economy, every little bit of savings can add up and help families," said Andrea Astrachan, consumer advisor for Stop & Shop. "Our new gas savings program makes it easy for consumers to save by doing something they already do -- their weekly grocery shopping."

Summer Vacationers Still Driving Despite Fuel Costs
According to forecasts by AAA, summer vacationers are still planning to go, but many will drive shorter distances and stay closer to home due to fuel prices. Among AAA's gas-savings tips: Look for ways to save on gas at supermarkets. AAA offers the following additional tips to help get the most out of each tank of gas:

-- Avoid quick starts and stops and consolidate errands.
-- Don't idle unnecessarily.
-- Keep tires properly inflated.
-- Drive at moderate speeds.
-- Lighten your load by removing car carriers and excess trunk cargo.

How the Stop & Shop Gas Rewards Program Works The majority of Stop & Shop stores throughout New England will offer gas rewards. For every dollar spent on groceries, consumers will earn one point, and for every 50 points they will receive 10 cents off per gallon of their next gas purchase at Stop & Shop (check www.stopandshop.com/stores/gas.htm for participating locations where consumers can earn gas rewards, gas locations and additional reward details).

For example, a consumer who spends $55 on groceries would then be eligible for a 10 cent per gallon discount the next time he gets gas, with the extra 5 points remaining on his card. On his next shopping trip, he spends $95 on groceries. With 100 points on his card, he is eligible for 20 cents off per gallon on his next gas purchase at Stop & Shop. Gas rewards are good for up to 60 days from the date of grocery purchase. Points are not awarded on all items.*

In addition and through a partnership with Christy's stores on Cape Cod, Stop & Shop grocery customers at participating locations purchasing $50 or more of groceries in a single transaction will earn a 20-cents per gallon reward that can be used at Christy's stores offering gasoline for purchase.

This new gas program offers savings that are in addition to the 5-cents per gallon discount Stop & Shop card holders already received.
