The deadline for SAE International's Commercial Vehicle Excellence in Media Award is fast approaching. Entries need to be postmarked by Aug. 31, 2008.

The SAE International Commercial Vehicle Excellence in Media Award is designed to recognize journalists, broadcasters and photographers for outstanding work in explaining issues in the commercial-vehicle industry for the general public.

SAE International will award a grand prize of $1,000 for the best article, video, book or photograph about the commercial vehicle industry published in a news outlet for general audiences.

Commercial vehicle topics include trucking, mining, farm equipment, public transportation, construction equipment and emissions. All nominated work must have appeared for the first time between the dates of Aug. 1, 2007 and July 31, 2008, in a publication geared to a general readership.

SAE International defines a commercial vehicle as any on or off-road vehicle, machine or equipment used for commerce purposes.

The competition will be judged by an independent panel of university journalism professors with newsroom experience.

The award will be presented at the 2008 SAE Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress and Exhibition, Oct. 7-9 in Rosemont, Ill.

Last year, the inaugural year for the award, Greg Bluestein from the Associated Press won for his story on emissions.
