ATLANTA - October 30, 2008: On the verge of General Motors acquiring Chrysler, creating the world's largest automobile company, another major transportation deal has taken center stage. Late Wednesday night news was announced that Delta Airlines has acquired rival Northwest for $2.6 billion in stock.

The all-stock transaction is the first domestic airline link-up in three years. The deal was finalized after the U.S. Justice Department completed its anti-trust investigation. There's speculation that this deal will spur on additional mergers in an industry racked with incredible business incompetence and malfeasance (a bit of an editorial comment).

Wags in The Auto Channel's newsroom were heard saying, "Wait'll you see how much they charge for their paper bag lunches now."
